2. English Level Placement Test (CELT - COMU English Level Test)
The English Level Placement Test will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the School of Foreign Languages. Newly registered students must take the placement test to determine their level and be placed in appropriate courses.

!!! It is mandatory for all students in the preparatory program to take the placement test. Failure to take the placement test will result in losing the right to take the exemption exam and starting the preparatory education at the lowest level. Therefore, attending this exam is of great importance. To access sample questions and answers for the placement test, click here.

3. English Exemption Exam (CEPT - COMU English Proficiency Test)
Students in the English Language Education and English Language and Literature departments who score 70 or above in the placement test, and students in other departments who score 60 or above, are eligible to take the English Exemption Exam.

The English Exemption Exam will begin on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. The exam consists of two stages. Students who pass the first stage will be eligible to take the second stage.

  • Stage 1: Tuesday, September 17, 2024, 10:00 AM (Listening, Reading) The first stage of the exemption exam consists of 20 multiple-choice questions on listening and 10 questions on reading. Students who score below 70 in the English Language Education and English Language and Literature departments and below 60 in other departments will be considered unsuccessful and will not proceed to the second stage of the exam.
  • Stage 2: Wednesday, September 18, 2024, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Writing, Speaking) Students who score sufficient points in the first stage will take the second stage of the exemption exam. In this stage, students’ writing and speaking skills will be assessed. In the writing exam, students will be asked to write a 300-350 word essay of 4-5 paragraphs on one of the four given topics within 60 minutes. In the speaking exam, students are expected to understand questions on a specific topic and speak for approximately 5-6 minutes in response. The exemption exam success score is calculated by taking 50% from Stage 1 (25% Listening, 25% Reading) and 50% from Stage 2 (25% Writing, 25% Speaking).

4. Exemption Applications
Newly registered students do not need to submit a petition to take the exemption exam. Students who pass the placement test will be eligible for the exemption exam.

5. Students Registered in 2023 and Before
Students registered in 2023 and before must submit their signed petitions to the student affairs of the School of Foreign Languages in person or by scanning or photographing them clearly and sending them via email to ozgegulme17@comu.edu.tr between September 2-11, 2024, to take the English Exemption Exam.

Students registered in 2023 and before can participate in the exemption exam without taking the placement test, provided they submit a petition and meet no prerequisites. However, if these students fail the exemption exam and have not taken the placement test, they will start the preparatory education at the lowest level. Therefore, it is important for these students to take the placement test to ensure they receive education in classes appropriate to their level, even though there is no prerequisite for taking the exemption exam. Students who fail the preparatory class for two consecutive years will be dismissed from their departments at the end of this academic year and placed in inactive student status. If these students have not failed due to absenteeism during this period, they can take the Preparatory Exemption Exam held in September for three years. If they pass the exemption exam, they can continue their education as active students in undergraduate programs.

6. Exemption from the English Preparatory Program
(ÇOMÜ Foreign Language Education-Teaching and Foreign Language Preparatory Education-Teaching Directive Article 10) To be exempt from the Mandatory Foreign Language Preparatory Program, students who meet at least one of the conditions listed below will be considered exempt and can start their education in their registered departments:

  3. Those who have completed their secondary education in an institution where the language of instruction is the designated foreign language spoken as a native language in that country, and who have completed their secondary education in these institutions within the last three years. These students must submit their documents to the student affairs of the School of Foreign Languages in person or by scanning or photographing them clearly and sending them via email to ozgegulme17@comu.edu.tr at least one week before the exam. The School Board of Directors will review the equivalency of the preparatory programs and exams and make the final decision on exemption.
